Dear Tyler, the Creator,
Please get your shit together, I’m still waiting on my vinyl.
Dear Tyler, the Creator,

—Helicopter

Take my hand and pray with me
My final days in company
The devil now has come for me
And helicopters circling the scene
And I pray for rest
Could you pray for us?
We know he loves you the best
We know he loves you the best
The light’s inside my cave
I’m tired of my cave
Oh, these drugs, they play on me these terrible ways
They don’t pay like they used to pay
I used to make it day to day
No one cares for me
I keep no company
I have minimal needs
And now they are through with me
Now they are through with me

Having just heard the latest Foo Fighter’s single ‘ROPE’ today I couldn’t help noticing the obvious parallels to Dave Grohl’s side project Them Crooked Vultures -the hard rock super group between Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme (Queen’s of the Stone Age).
It seems that Grohl has been ripping a few pages from the books of his new band mates; and its a good thing too. This is the first decent Foo Fighters song I’ve heard in a while. Almost psychedelic at first, the song sets up a kind of call and response groove between Grohl and Shiflett and quickly launches into a steady, slightly off-kilter rhythm guitar theme. The straight up rock n’ roll pulse pushes us forward only to draw us back every 4 bars with a purposefully off-beat drum fill, giving the song a 2 steps forward-one step back kind of vibe; very reminiscent of Grohl’s drumming in Them Crooked Vultures.
It is at 1:09, however, that I completely loose interest. The chorus “Gimme some rope/I’m coming loose” unfortunately drags Grohl back into his old habits. The basic G/Em/Bm/A chordal pattern is accesible at best and the lyrics present us with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Thank god it’s only 30 seconds long (perhaps 30 seconds too long) and then we’re right back where we started from.
I’ve posted Them Crooked Vultures -‘Mind Eraser’ below…
